Does a property owner have a duty to provide security guards?
Whether a property owner has a duty to provide security guards depends. Generally, in the state of Florida, whether you’re a residential or commercial property, and more so in multi-family residential, as opposed to single family residential, but whether or not you have a duty to provide any security implements such as that depends on whether crime is foreseeable on your property, or around your property. Property owners generally have a duty to make their property safe for people who are lawfully upon their property.
So, with regard to commercial properties, if they are the site of some prior crime or in a high crime area, than generally yes, they should provide a physically observable means of security. Whether it’s security guards, signage, roving patrols, off-duty police officers, they have an obligation to make that property safe, especially when they’re making money by inviting you onto their property.
